General Settings

To enable support in your software for pashto and other languages, your system must support unicode. Most system programs have this enabled by default. For others, you may have to enable it manually during compilation. A very good guide on unicode support in system programs is given here. For other programs (which you compile yourself), make the following changes in /etc/make.conf:

USE="unicode bidi"
LINGUAS="ar fa ur en ps" #For arabic, farsi, urdu, english, pashto

If you do not compile your software with the unicode and bidi flags, you have a chance that your software will not be able to work with pashto even if other applications in your system are able to. If you have already compiled a software without these flags, then you should re-compile them again. For e.g., to re-compile openoffice you will use “emerge openoffice”.

Keyboard Layouts

There are different Pashto keyboard layouts available that I know of. Some of them are listed below:

Liwal: Their’s is one of the first pashto keyboard layouts that were created back in the late 1990s. Their layout targetted windows based operating systems and was available only commercially.

Khpala Pashto: Was the first keyboard layout that was available for free for individual use only. Their layout was available only for windows based operating systems.

Evertype: Was the first set of keyboard layouts that were released under official patronage. The layouts were for Afghanistan based spoken languages including Pashto, Dari, Brahui and Uzbek. The layouts were based on “Computer Locale Requirements for Afghanistan” specifications from the United Nations Development Program and the Afghan Transitional Islamic Administration Ministry of Communications. Most linux distributions did not support these specifications, but they are catching up since 2006 after creation of dari, pashto and uzbek keymap files by Emal Alekozai.

As of now (June 2010), the keymap files by Emal Alekozai are included in xkb and so if you have an up-to-date system, you have very little configuration to do. But if you need to use the Khpala Pashto layout as well, then you can do the following steps:

Check for a file called “af” inside /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols. The contents of this file provide various keyboard layouts (including the evertype layouts) for Pashto, Dari, and Uzbek. If the file exists and you only require the Evertype layouts, then proceed to step 6. If you want the Khpala Pashto keyboard layout, or if the “af” file does not exist, then proceed with step 2.

Download the keymap archive file. Extract the file af and copy it to /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols. You may require root access to do this.

Modify the file “base.lst” located in /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules using nano or any other text editor. The layout of this file is as such:

  ! model
  ... // List of keyboard models
  ! layout
  ... // List of layouts (per country)
  ! variant
  ... // List of languages and variants

Under the section “! layout”, add the following entry (if it does not exist already):

  af		Afghanistan

Under the section “! variant”, add the following entry (again, making sure not to create duplicate entries):

  ps              af: Pashto
  uz              af: Southern Uzbek
  olpc-ps         af: OLPC Pashto
  olpc-fa         af: OLPC Dari
  olpc-uz         af: OLPC Southern Uzbek
  pash            af: Khyber.ORG (Khpala Pashto)

Exit when finished. Example output is below:

Modify the file “base.xml” located in /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules using nano or any other text editor. Search for the following text (You should find it at around line 1,348):

        <variant>
          <configItem>
            <name>olpc-uz</name>
            <description>OLPC Southern Uzbek</description>
            <languageList><iso639Id>uzb</iso639Id></languageList>
          </configItem>
        </variant>

Immediately after this, and before the </variantList> tag, add the following text:

        <variant>
          <configItem>
            <name>pash</name>
            <description>Khyber.ORG (Khpala Pashto Keyboard)</description>
            <languageList><iso639Id>pus</iso639Id></languageList>
          </configItem>
        </variant>

Your output should look as follows:

Save changes and exit.

You may need to restart your X session either by logging out, or pressing CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE, or running /etc/init.d/xdm restart from the terminal.

Once X is restarted, you should be able to see (under gnome) the keyboard indicator on your desktop.

If you don’t, you can enable it (under gnome) using following steps:Right click on gnome panel and select “Add to Panel”

NOTE: Just because you enable a Pashto layout does not mean you can use it in every software in your system. To avoid this, see note on USE in General Settings

Google always detects your click fraud on Adsense pages. I know many prsons who always say after getting banned from google adsense that what we have done? We have never click on our own ads? we have never gave any incentive to click on ads. But they know that they have duplicate accounts and they do not know that google can detect their fraud with following methods.

The web pages you visit: Google AdSense is used by many web pages for online advertising, and Google’s cookies record your visits to web pages with their ad program on them. They have very intelligent bots that are monitoring your activity all the time. These will monitor if you visit any hidden or click incentive pages. Then you will get banned soon.

The blogs you read: If you use Google Reader, Google knows the blogs you subscribe to. Even if you’re not on Google Reader, Google knows all of the Blogger pages you visit.

Who and what you’re emailing: oops. You are can be caught up by google when you send an e-mail to any preson. Google knows this by gmail that to whom you are sending a message, what will he do.(May be a click request). Google will take action quickly.

What’s on your PC: If you’re using Google Desktop, Google knows everything that you keep on your computer.

Your schedule: Google Calendar opens your personal and business schedule up to the prying eyes of Google.

Your social network and interests: Google indexes sites like Orkut, Facebook, and Digg, and as such, has access to information about what you’re interested in online.

Where you and your friends are: Using Google Latitude, cell phone users can share their location with others. Even if you’re not using Latitude, Google Maps for mobile can approximate your location.

Your medical issues: Do you use Google Health? If so, you’re sharing your entire medical history with Google.

Mobile number: On SMS, Google Mobile, and Gmail, you can reveal your mobile number to Google.

What you, your friends and family look like and do: With the photo editor Picasa, you’re revealing your photographs, friends, and moments to Google.

Part of the magic that the search company has been able to cast on the human race has to do with its very deep strategic thinking bit. Email, at least a few years (months?) ago, had been the killer application on the Internet. Google targetted web based email services segment with the fast and efficient Gmail service and ever since than, they had been busy making it more and more useful by adding features that would let people just glued to the application.

Google Gears, the component that lets websites operate more like desktop applications, has now been tweaked to serve Gmail in ‘offline’ modes. Yes, out there they mean offline when traveling by air or in the train but for us here in Pakistan (and I guess the entire region), connectivity can never be taken for granted. Hence, the newly introduced Offline Gmail (still in the labs) has a lot more application instances than just traveling and this has more to do with the next billion people who are, or will soon be, about to go online on patchy and flip-flop networks worldwide.

In the backdrop of the addiction to online documents and Gmail (now with the powers of enduring the outages caused by ‘traveling’ in the west or by KESC/Wapda here at home) Google’s Chrome, with its built in support for Goolge Gears (you don’t need a plugin for that in Chrome) and sepearately processed tabs is gently holding us by the arms and taking us from Deskabad to Cloudpur. And before we realize, the desktop (as we know it) would go the dodo’s way.

Google AdSense is the current leader in content-sensitive web-based marketing. Webmasters can place Google AdSense JavaScript code on their web pages in order to allow Google’s servers to show context sensitive advertisements (Google Adwords). The left hand side of this page shows an example of a Google AdSense skyscraper displaying a text or image ad.
Google’s terms and conditions are very strict such that many web publishers cannot use adsense adverts on their sites. They are either denied from joining the Google AdSense program in the first instance, or in a situation that is becoming more and more common do not wish to do business with Google. A number of publishers are also finding their Adsense accounts are being disabled for reasons that are completely beyond their control. The problem is that most of the alternatives to Google’s Adsense are pretty useless. Most of the good ones (such as doubleclick) are only interested in very large volume customers and so are not interested in the little guy with his blog who wants to earn a small income on the side. For this reason I have compiled my Top 10 alternatives to Google’s Adsense that are ideal for the small time publisher.

If you are a advertiser then you may be interested in these best alternatives to adwords.

The growing use of graphics cards as surrogate supercomputers could spell trouble for users of short passwords.

Researchers say the growing number of processors on graphics cards will soon make it trivial for them to crack short passwords.

A password of seven characters or less will soon be “hopelessly inadequate” they claim.

The researchers suggest passwords should be at least 12 characters long to be safe.

Brute force

A team led by Richard Boyd from the Georgia Tech Research Institute has been investigating what effect the number-crunching power of modern graphics cards could have on the crackability of passwords.

Many graphics cards employ hundreds of so-called stream processors working in parallel to render images. Many scientists now use the basic arithmetical properties of these processors to help crunch through data generated during experiments.

The number crunching abilities of graphics cards are now comparable to the multi-million dollar supercomputers built about a decade ago, said Mr Boyd.

The parallel processing systems inside graphics cards are very good at carrying out so-called “brute force” attacks that effectively try every possible combination of letters and numbers until the right one is found.

Longer passwords take longer to crack and offer better protection, say the researchers.

“Right now we can confidently say that a seven-character password is hopelessly inadequate,” said Mr Boyd, “and as GPU power continues to go up every year, the threat will increase.”

A better alternative, he suggested, would be a 12-character combination of upper and lower case letters, symbols and digits.

Ultimately, suggest the researchers, users may be forced to rely on whole sentences that are a mix of different sorts of characters to ensure no-one else can guess their password and get at online services.

A cluttered CV

CVs where people simply put all possible information and expect recruiters to scroll through them to find out relevant details. The only destiny these CVs have is getting the ‘delete’ key pressed and landing up in the trash bins.

HR people get hundreds of applications for a single position. They don’t have the time to sift through your CV and see if each candidate suits their purpose. So, it is your job to make your CV as user-friendly, so that they can find the information they are looking for in a single glance. More after the break…

Grammatical and spelling mistakes

Grammatical errors and spelling mistakes not only look shabby, but they reveal a lot about one?s attitude. If a HR manager receives a business proposal with grammar and spelling mistakes, the first thing he would think is, “Is this person really serious about the business?”

Similarly, a CV with grammatical errors and spelling mistakes will suggest that he does not care enough for this opportunity, you are lazy and you do not have an eye for detail. Nobody wants to hire an employee with any of these characteristics. So it’s a given that such CVs are headed to the rejected pile.

Past failures and/or health problems

Your CV is not the place for you to talk about past failures or health problems, so keep them off paper. Some people may argue that almost everybody has the sense not to write about failures and health problems on CVs and while I agree with them, it’s been known to happen.
So this pointer is for those who do commit this mistake. Take a look at your CV again and if you have addressed any of these problems directly or indirectly, it is wise to edit them out.

Current or expected CTC

Many people have developed the habit of writing about their current salary or expected salary on a CV, as they assume that all prospective employers are going to ask about it, or that most job notifications require it. It is advised not to mention it on the CV, unless specifically asked to do so.

Vague/unclear contact details

Picture this situation — you have a menu card from a nearby restaurant in front of you. You like the dishes they serve and the price is right too. You are impressed by the fact that they deliver within 10 minutes. You pick up the phone to make a call, but are not able to find the telephone number on the menu card. You look a second time, but you are still not able to find it. You’re hungry and there’s another menu card from another restaurant right in front of you, which looks equally good.

What will you do? Won’t you immediately place an order with the restaurant that offers a number and ask them to send the food ASAP? Later, you may realise that there was a phone number on the first menu card, hidden somewhere in a corner, but the opportunity is gone now. You may land up in a similar situation if your contact details are not clear or not easy to find for employers. Some other things to note here are:

Provide a phone number where potential employers can talk to you directly and don’t have to go through your parents or friends.

Keep the e-mail addresses formal – mostly a combination of your first and last name.

Keep the e-mail address small and uncomplicated to avoid any typing mistakes if employers decide to contact you online.

Writing a CV is not a difficult task. The best person to do it is you. The only thing you need is to analyse your candidature properly and present it well. You will need to draft and re-draft your CV many times before you are finally happy with it.
